The idyllic East Allgaeu area

Work on Neuschwanstein began in 1869. This palace, which is situated near Schwangau in Ostallgäu, along with Herrenchiemsee and Linderhof palaces architecturally caused a great stir.

District Ostallgäu

The District East-Allgaeu with it's 45 communities offers a manifold and strongly developing structure of economics and also a remarkably vital cultural life between Fuessen and Buchloe

The cycling boom in Germany which has been continuing for several years, growth rates which are still approaching two-digit levels for cycling holidays and the ideal conditions in the region:

These are all aspects that the Ostallgäu is taking account of in its own special way. Over the past years and with the support of the EU, a comprehensive network of routes covering more than 1500 km with some 90 themed routes and round trips for all types of cyclists, whether leisure cyclists, family groups, sports cyclists or mountain bikers have been worked out and uniformly signed.

The Ostallgäu region is a hiking paradise with currently 909 hiking tours, there are plenty of options for recreational athletes and active holidaymakers.  In total 770 hiking trails, 72 long distance hiking trails, 23 pilgrim trails and 44 others are waiting to be explored.

Do you like to hike, cycle (1,133 cycling tours, check the link) or love the mountains? In Ostallgäu you are at the right place to do so. You will find many opportunities of different types of hiking  trails, cycling trails and mountain trails to suit you and your abilities. Ostallgäu has you many beautiful lakes and where ever you go you will see the backdrop of the  Allgäuer Alps.

Discovering East Allgäu

In the surroundings of Füssen you will find many lakes for swimming, hiking and cycling around them. Of course Neuschwanstein Castle from Ludwig II of Bavaria is just 2.5 Km away from Füssen, (Munich - Neuschwanstein 306 km). Don't stop with only visiting Neuschwanstein Castle with its many tourist, visit also the Neo-Gothic Castle Hohenschwangau and Discover the "Königswinkel" with its famous and its undiscovered Sights, discover its natural beauty of the area, the cities of Füssen with the High Castle, Schwangau, Pfronten, visit the lakes, find the mountain top castle ruins like Eisenberg, Falkenstein and Ehrenberg in the nearby Tyrolean Alps.

After many years we revisited the Area around Füssen, its natural beauty thrilled us and we are very fond of the landscape and the villages.

Eat & Drink in Allgäu 

The Allgäu is known for its very good diary products, like for example the Allgäuer Emmental. If you love meat and venison  you will find it here in good quality. 

The area is know for its nudle dishes like Käsespätzle, Knöpfle and Maultaschen, but also meat dishes and of course Sauerkraut is an element of the local kitchen.

Braten = Roast, Nudeln = noodles, Knödel = Dumplings, Kaiserschmarrn = cut-up and sugared pancake with raisins, Spätzle = noodles

What to eat: (just some ideas)

Flädles soup, Clear soup cut into stripes

Allgäuer Zwiebelrostbraten, a roastbeef with deep fried onions served with Käsespäzle (Cheese noodles with 5 different cheeses)

Fine dinning with Wildfleisch  (boar, venison) in form of goulash, steaks or roast

Krustenbraten Pork roast with sauce and potato dumplings

Apfelküchle with Vanilla Ice Cream, Apple rings baked in dough with Vanilla ice cream and cream 

Zwetschgenknödel, Dumplings made with curd cheese and plums, served with red berry compote,

Kaiserschmarrncut-up and sugared pancake with raisins, 

Dampfnudeln made of flour, water, yeast, salt, butter and sugar, cooked in a close pot with little milk and butter until the liquid evaporates and a brown crust comes at the bottom of the Dampfnudel.

Schwangau for families

It is easily seen from far away, an enchanted castle better than any to be found in the most beautiful book of fairytales. Schloss Neuschwanstein is the fantasy of the Bavarian storybook king Ludwig II, turned into stone. Schwangau, the village of royal castles

Schwangau, the village of the royal palaces of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, is situated in a picturesque spot in the Allgäu where the German Alpine Road and the Romantic Road cross. Schwangau charms visitors with its four lakes, the gentle landscape of the Alpine foothills and the mountainous uplands. Beyond the world-famous castles Schwangau offers many exciting possibilities for an interesting holiday trip. The small village has something to offer for everybody´s taste: a journey with the cable car up to the mountain Tegelberg (1,720 m) in order to enjoy the panoramic alpine-view, excursions into the nature reserve of the Ammergebirge (Ammer Mountains) or boat cruising or sailing and swimming in one of the lakes. Activity time in the village of the king’s castles

Wald Erlebnis Zentrum / Forest Experience Center Ziegelwies

Picturesque on the banks of the Blue Lech, formerly the border station between Germany and Austria, the forest experience center Ziegelwies offers a boundless nature experience.

The tree canopy trail (480m long) takes the visitor into the fascinating world of treetops. At a height of up to 21m you gain new views into the wild river landscape of the Lech, as well as into the mountains of Bavaria and Tyrol.

The adventure paths playfully explain which important protective functions the forest has. One learns interesting information about animals and plants and finds out, for example, how far deer, grasshopper and Co. can jump or why the Lech is so turquoise. In addition to various game elements, you can also move from one river side to the other in a variety of ways.

In addition to the nature trails, the mountain and the Auwaldpfad, the forest adventure center offers an exhibition about the mountain forest, a newly opened geological exhibition and in the pavilion a wood exhibition, which shows the diverse uses of the raw material wood. Also, if you want to learn something about beekeeping of the past and today, this is the place for you. We are looking forward to your visit!

Our River Forest Trail is 1.5 km long. There you can cross a river in many different ways. You can be a ferry - man yourself or move hand over hand over the river.

Our Mountain Forest Trail is 1.7 km long. There you can enjoy our adventure playground or play your own music on wooden instruments. Climb the giant spider web or jump as far as a deer.

The treetop nature trail is 480 meters long and runs at the eye level with the trees of the lowland forest. From a height of 21 meters you enjoy entirely new insights, great perspectives and a panoramic view to the Lech and the surrounding mountains.
