
A Short History of Dubai
Dubai - the largest and most populous city in the United Arab Emirates - is the capital of the Emirate of Dubai, thus one of the 7 Emirates that make up the country.
Dubai is an absolute monarchy and the ruler is Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum.
Dubai is thought to have been established as a fishing village in the early 18th century. Through its geographical location it has always been a trading hub.
Until 1930 Dubai was known for its Pearl Exports – the great depression & the innovation of cultured pearls, however, made Dubai’s pearling industry collapse.
1966: A milestone in Dubai’s history. Oil is discovered in Dubai's Fateh (“good fortune”) oil field
1971: The United Arab Emirates was formed for mutual security and prosperity of the seven so-called “Trucial States”. The UAE Dirham was introduced and massive infrastructure projects launched:

1985: Emirates Airlines launched. Jebel Ali Free Zone inaugurated, attracting considerable overseas investment.
1999: Burj Al Arab Hotel opens and claims to be the world's only seven-star hotel.
2002: Sheikh Mohammed launches Internet and Media City and private ownership for foreigners laying
the foundations for “New Dubai”.
2003: Ambitious projects began, including the world's tallest tower, and 200 man-made islands.
2006: Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum becomes Ruler of Dubai and Vice President of the UAE.
2009: Dubai’sMetro is launched, the only driverless metro in the world.
2010: Burj Khalifa is inaugurated and is until now the tallest man-made structure in the world
